THE 64th ANNUAL MACEDONIAN OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
One of the oldest golf tournaments in Ontario

The Macedonian Open Golf Tournament is a very special event where friends join together for fun, camaraderie…and some serious golf!

The tournament helps to raise much needed funds for a number of charitable causes including: Canadian Macedonian Place, a registered, not-for-profit residence providing first class, affordable accommodation and services to seniors; support to 32 nursing home beds dedicated to Macedonian seniors; and the University of Toronto Macedonian language program.

The Macedonian Open Golf Tournament was first established in 1942 by a group of young Macedonian businessmen who used to get together every Tuesday afternoon for a round of golf. At the end of the year they would have a tournament amongst themselves that they called the Macedonian Open. This informal event continued for over ten years.

In 1953, a young Macedonian by the name of Van Petroff joined the group, and the following year the tournament became a more formal event with Van Petroff as its president. Other members of the group included: Victor Paskaleff; Paul Phillips; Larry Geleff; Peter Geleff; Lou Velanoff; Chris Martin; Cuzo Tamo; Alec Evans; Cass Phillips; and Jim Floras.

In the early sixties the tournament name was changed to the Macedonian Pro-Amateur Championship and between 6 and 20 professional golfers including Ken Duggan, Alvie Thompson, Bobby Rose, and Joe Noble participated. In order to attract these professionals, Van Petroff put up $250 in prize money. From its founding the tournament always had a “Macedonian” name and despite political pressure to change it, Van Petroff stood firm and assured the name of the golf tournament would never change.

For decades, Van Petroff presided over and organized this tournament and subsidized the cost of the tournament personally in order to maintain the highest standards. After his many years of managing the tournament Van finally handed it over to Canadian Macedonian Place in 1993, under the condition that net profits would go to help cover the costs of the Macedonian language course at the University of Toronto, and other charitable causes, with the remaining profits going to C.M.P.

The tournament has now become a highlight of the Macedonian social calendar. The day starts with registration when the golfers pick up their golf and dinner tickets, gift kit and commemorative souvenir.

Some of the more serious golfers head over to the practice range to sharpen their game while others relax and enjoy Macedonian Sausage & Peppers, a Macedonian Open Tournament tradition started by Van Petroff. Plenty of food and drink is also available throughout the afternoon. At 12:15 p.m. the 288 golfers including men, women and juniors head over to their starting hole and at 12:30 sharp the tournament begins.

As usual the weather is perfect, it is for this reason that many believe that God is Macedonian.

Following a great afternoon of golf, everyone gathers at the clubhouse for a traditional dinner that includes the favourite Macedonian beans (grafche), peppers, feta cheese and olives. Raffle tickets are sold, and a live auction for some wonderful items, generously provided by sponsors is held.

As the dinner winds down the presentation begins with the awarding of trophies and prizes to the winners. As the night draws to a close, the victorious and the vanquished in a spirit of goodwill and camaraderie congratulate each other for another fun day of golf and look forward to next year’s tournament.
